VISUAL Carlow seeks a creative and motivated candidate to cover the position of Curator of Learning on an 8 month contract. This person will join a vibrant team of creative professionals and be responsible for the delivery of a dynamic learning programme.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
Annual Salary: Salary commensurate with skills and experience.
Contract: 8 months fixed term, 32 hours per week. Notice: One month notice is required.

Finding ways to collaborate and communicate is more vital than ever. The Learning Curator will work within VISUAL’s artistic team to create accessible and intellectually rigorous, learning and public programme events and activities in the galleries at VISUAL and off-site in Carlow.
VISUAL is committed to developing and producing an artistic programme that places public engagement and social inclusion at its centre. Learning at VISUAL is a dialogical practice; through the arts and the work of artists our Learning Programme fosters a spirit of public enquiry and curiosity.
The successful candidate will have:
- An in-depth knowledge of learning, education, public engagement and pedagogical practices in the arts.
- A proven capacity to conceptualise, devise and deliver a learning programme for a public institution.
- The capacity to collaborate with a creative team and reach collective goals.
- Experience working and collaborating with the general public, varied groups and communities.
- Experience of working with artists to develop and support strategies for learning and public engagement.
- Excellent writing, editing and digital literacy skills.
- Excellent mediation and facilitation skills.
The following qualities will be required:
- Creativity with a passion for learning through the arts.
- Flexibility – some evening and weekend work will be required.
- High self-motivation and ability to take initiative.
- Excellent time management and strong work ethic.
- The ability to facilitate workshops in a variety of materials for all ages.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Specific responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Coordination of the Learning at VISUAL Programme.
- Creation of seasonal learning opportunities and spaces for public enquiry in association with changing artistic programme.
- Building and maintaining relationships with community groups; arts, education and cultural institutions, local stakeholders and others.
- Working with community groups; arts, education and cultural institutions; local stakeholders; and others to devise and realise projects and artistic exchanges.
- Working with the CEO and Artistic Director on relevant funding applications.
- Assisting with the Gallery Volunteers Programme.
- Working closely with the CEO and Artistic Director, Marketing Manager, Galleries Curator and Theatre Programme Manager to build audiences and engagement opportunities.
- Building relationships with local/national partners.
Other duties and obligations include:
- Acting as an ambassador and advocate in representing VISUAL.
- Adhering to stated staff policies and procedures, as set down in the staff handbook.
- Adhering to procedures relating to the proper use and care of equipment and materials for which the role has responsibility.
- Participating in training and development programmes/courses to maintain and improve performance and to assist in identifying self-training and support needs.
- Participating and working within a performance management and development process.
- Any other reasonable duties or projects that may be required in the role, as assigned by the CEO.
