Some things are not what they seem. What makes an object itself? Where does it begin and where does it end? Is the shadow a part of it? What if it was made from something else, how would it be different?

In the exhibitions downstairs, Anne Hardy collects tiny pieces of the discarded objects from life; like ring pulls from cans, or earrings she finds on the side of the road. She transforms them

by casting them in plaster or metal. Andy Fitz transforms objects

in a different way. He takes everyday objects from the world and places them in new layouts that make them strange or unusual - they become sculptures.

In this space you can make your own sculptures. Sculptures don’t have to do anything, they are things. Sculptures don’t have to be beautiful. They can be weird, or sad, or funny, or strange or spooky. They can be made from wood or clay or bronze, but they can also be made from egg boxes, or lightbulbs, or any other things you find lying around the house.

In this workshop you can transform objects into a sculpture

- Begin by taking a couple of objects to the table
- Consider their shape and colour
- Try attach some objects together
- What can you make from a few objects attached together?
- Can you put some things inside one another?
- Can you add some bits?
- How much can you take away until it’s not itself anymore?
- Can you use this object in a different way?
- What if you turn it upside down, or inside out
- What if you make lots of little holes in it...

Use your gut feeling… just start to make something!

When you’ve made your sculpture, take a picture of it in our photo studio and tell us about what you created.

- How did you make it?
- What materials did you use?
- How does it make you feel?
- How much would it cost?
- Can it do anything else?
- Where would it be happiest?

An exhibition is about showing your work to other people. It could also be about putting your sculpture in the place where it can be happiest. Place your sculpture in the gallery, show it to other people, hear their ideas, ask what they think. Are you inspired by anyone else’s sculpture? Could you start again and make another?

This space was made collaboratively by the VISUAL team. Why not take a photo of your creation and share it with us? @visual_carlow
