County Carlow Environmental Network invites you to an engaging evening of short films and discussion focused on wetlands, peatlands and sustainability.

Featured Films

Saving the Turf
Directed by Fiona Breen, Adam Bristow & Brendan Farrell | 17 minutes
Ireland’s bogs date back to the last ice age and have long provided livelihoods and fuel for local communities. Saving the Turf honours a rapidly disappearing tradition while drawing attention to the growing need for social and environmental responsibility.

The Wetlands | 15 minutes
Featuring Norman Allard Jr. and Tom Biebighauser, this film explores the vital role wetlands play in our ecosystems. It highlights the importance of wetland restoration and the value of Indigenous knowledge and skills in protecting these landscapes.

The Bog Song | 10 minutes
This film follows the Drummin Bog Project, a voluntary community-led initiative working to restore County Carlow’s only remaining raised bog. Once heavily degraded by drainage and hand-cutting of peat, the project aims to rehabilitate this important peatland habitat.

Additional Short Films

A selection of short films showcasing some of Ireland’s most beautiful wetlands, including:

  • Pollardstown Fen
  • Clara Bog
  • Tralee Bay
  • Coole Park
  • Wexford Wildfowl Reserve
  • Two LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature videos

Secondary School Film Screenings

The evening will also feature three short sustainability-themed films created by local secondary school students from Tyndall College, Knockbeg College, and Coláiste Aindriú (2024) for the Rubbish Film Festival.

Panel Discussion

The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A with invited speakers, including representatives from the Drummin Bog Project, the Saving the Turf film team, the Local Authority Waters Programme, along with other contributors.
