VISUAL and Carlow Arts Festival are pleased to announce Behind the Curtain as the title and theme of Artworks 2024, the annual open call exhibition hosted by VISUAL as part of Carlow Arts Festival.

This year's exhibition will consider things that are hidden and revealed, and how the use of methods from theatre, film, performance, and art-historical traditions can be used in artmaking today.

The exhibition’s thematic is informed by both historical and contemporary art-practices, including 17th-century Flemish painter Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts, and contemporary visual artist Ulla von Brandenburg.

Artworks invites submission of works that broadly can be understood through the themes of these artists, such as disguise, transformation, illusion, masking, costume, world-building and role-playing, becoming other. Artists are invited to submit existing work in any medium for selection. Behind the Curtain will be presented at VISUAL from Thursday 6 June-Sunday 1 September 2024. All artists selected will receive an artist's fee. Artworks 2024 is open to visual art in all mediums.

The selection panel consists of; visual artist Ulla von Brandenburg; playwright, theatre-maker, and cabaret artist Pea Dinneen; VISUAL’s Curator Benjamin Stafford and Learning Curator Clare Breen, and Carlow Arts Festival’s Creative Producer Orlaith Tracey.
