2001: A Space Odyssey
A classic sci-fi film (1968) that feels relevant today as it addresses the same challenges we’re currently facing; AI ethics, technological dependence, human identity and the unknown future of our species.
The story: When a mysterious monolith discovered on the moon sets off a radio signal, a small group of astronauts and scientists are sent on a manned mission to Jupiter to investigate further. With most of the crew in suspended animation for the journey, the day-to-day travel is overseen by two astronauts and the ship’s computer HAL. When HAL starts behaving erratically, things quickly take a turn for the worst-setting one of the astronauts, Dr Dave Poole, on a survival mission that will eventually transcend space and time. Stanley Kubrick’s visually resplendent sci-fi masterpiece remains a remarkable feat of film making: intelligent, thrilling and breathtakingly staged.
