Connecting it to the new season of exhibitions at VISUAL, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey relates closely with Hold This and Kate O'Shea's Mycelium through its shared exploration of human existence, interconnected systems and the evolving relationship between humanity, technology and the wider universe.

While the film reflects on human evolution and our dependence on complex technological networks, Mycelium similarly draws on ideas of connection and interdependence, both in nature and society, through an immersive installation that brings together multiple media and emphasis on collaboration and collective knowledge.

The story: When a mysterious monolith discovered on the moon sets off a radio signal, a small group of astronauts and scientists are sent on a manned mission to Jupiter to investigate further. With most of the crew in suspended animation for the journey, the day-to-day travel is overseen by two astronauts and the ship’s computer HAL. When HAL starts behaving erratically, things quickly take a turn for the worst-setting one of the astronauts, Dr Dave Poole, on a survival mission that will eventually transcend space and time. Stanley Kubrick’s visually resplendent sci-fi masterpiece remains a remarkable feat of film making: intelligent, thrilling and breathtakingly staged.
