A firm favourite of the VISUAL Carlow team, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), remains profoundly relevant today because it perfectly encapsulates the timeless cinematic battle between good and evil, champions the values of preserving history and critiques the dangers of ideological fanaticism. In Hold This, the current exhibition at VISUAL, artists consider ideas of exchange and how analogue, interpersonal exchanges overlap, interact and conflict with technology. At a time when modern cinema is increasingly dominated by computer-generated imagery (CGI) and sprawling shared universes, Raiders remains a masterclass in tight pacing, practical effects and serialised storytelling.

The year is 1936 and the intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones sets out in search of the fabled Lost Ark of the Covenant, racing a bitter rival and his Nazi cohorts to the prize. Over the course of a hair-raising adventure, Indy endures explosions, spiders, snakes, booby traps, and bad guys in his quest to save the holy relic.

Director: Steven Spielberg
