A year-long programme of design activities 2018

Town Planners examines our sense of civic space, the principles of planning, and our relationships to the built environment and the world around us. Over the course of the year, an active programme of design activities exploring the future of Carlow Town will leave their traces in the Studio Gallery.
In the autumn season, artist Ruth Lyons will develop a project exploring natural habitats and shelter within the townscape of arlow informed by the Youth Manifesto and the knowledge of Carlow Beekeepers Association. Town Planners is co-produced by VISUAOL Carlow and Workhouse Union and funded through the Arts Council Engaging with Architecture Strand.

Town Planners: People, Place and Participation

Bringing together inspiring examples of creativity, civic engagement and place-making in urban and rural planning and design, this conference looks at how
communities, local authorities and agencies can work collaboratively to create vibrant shared spaces and civic infrastructure.

Town Makers Sessions will focus on case-studies and practical examples of making it happen.

Discussions and Workshop topics include sustainable and democratic solutions for living together; craft and storytelling as tools for design; health, wellbeing and the role of nature in the city; Tools and approaches to community engagement in planning; and funding and creative planning processes.

World Café – A Workshop with Marjetica Potrĉ
Fri 12 Oct, 11am – 3pm

This workshop aims to bring together a diverse group of people developing creative social environments and situations including community groups, urban
planners, artists and architects. The event will be coordinated in a world café style, facilitating a range of conversations and interests. Lunch time food will be a Breadfellows’ meal by staff and artist-in-residence at VISUAL Clare Breen. Breadfellows’ Chats is a practice of collaboratively making ceramics and using them to share food. It foregrounds talking, making together and sharing food, as intimate gestures of care.
