School tours and art-making workshops are available to book for secondary and third level students of all ages. Each season at VISUAL, students explore the exhibitions through conversation, playful enquiry and making.
Using methodologies and materials inspired by our current exhibition, Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood, students are invited to take a tour, talk together and create their own artwork in response.
We will explore self-portraiture, portraiture and manifestos inspired by the huge variety of works by artists including Marlene Dumas, Elizabeth Cope and the Hackney Flashers, to name a few.
Note: This exhibition contains non-sexualised nudity related to childbirth and breastfeeding.
During the tour and workshops, students will practice…
- Looking together: Students will be introduced to the current exhibitions with collective exploration of the artworks and ideas through open, guided conversation.
- Hands-on making: The group will be invited to explore drawing techniques, to open up through quick drawing exercises with a variety of materials, then explore more in-depth approaches to drawing a self portrait. They will then let go and be encouraged to share their artwork and open it up to be added to by someone else or to work in a group. In Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood, many artists explore the sense of losing control, or opening themselves up to collaboration through the process of becoming a mother, workshop activities will explore these ideas.
- Sharing: Each group will present their work to each other and we will reflect together on the processes used and stories generated.
